The Right Underwear Makes All the Difference Postpartum

The Right Underwear Makes All the Difference Postpartum

One of the less-discussed realities of postpartum is the need for reliable, stress-free absorbency in those first few weeks.

In the early days, bleeding can be heavy and unpredictable. This is where The Emily becomes essential. The Emily is our highest absorbency style, designed with an extended absorbent panel that reaches almost to the waistband at both the front and back.

The Emily offers a level of coverage and reassurance that allows you to move, rest, and recover without constantly second-guessing. Like many high-waisted Wicks styles the waistband offers gentle support across the abdomen and sits comfortably over C-section scars.

As your body begins to heal and bleeding slows, a new phase often begins, where a new mother’s bladder might not be what it used to be and light bladder leaks become more common. They are in fact incredibly common, yet rarely talked about. This is where Wicks’ moderate absorbency pieces come into their own. Styles like the Swept Away Brief are designed to look and feel like everyday underwear. They’re comfortable, flattering, and discreet, so you can go about your day without a second thought.

A few months on, many women start to wonder when their cycle will return. The reality? It can be very unpredictable! We’ve all heard (or lived) the stories of being caught off guard at the worst possible moment. While those moments may become something you laugh about later, they’re far easier to navigate when you’re already wearing something designed to handle it.

While disposable products certainly have their place, they’re not always the most comfortable or convenient solution during this stage of life. That’s why postpartum leak-proof underwear offers such a meaningful alternative.

Wicks Intimates are designed to be worn just like regular underwear. For a new mum juggling recovery, sleep deprivation, and a newborn, simplicity matters. In fact, for many women, they quickly become something you reach for without even thinking.

Wicks absorbent underwear is a bit different to other brands: our pieces are incredibly high quality and made with care. We use eco-conscious fabrics including organic cotton for softness and breathability. Our new pieces include a waterproof yet breathable TPU barrier chosen not only for performance, but for its eco-conscious credentials.

At Wicks, we select premium, luxurious fabrics not just for durability, but for softness too. Because postpartum is a time when you’re giving so much of yourself, we want our Wicks women to feel not just comfortable but also a touch of indulgence.

In many ways, this is exactly how Wicks began.

In the early postpartum weeks, founder Lisa found herself relying on period underwear daily. But what was available felt purely functional. They were uncomfortable and ugly.  The thought was simple, but powerful: there had to be something better.

Wicks was created to answer that need for absorbent lingerie that doesn’t just perform, but feels considered, supportive, and quietly luxurious. And while Wicks has grown into a brand that supports women through many stages of life, its foundation will always be rooted in those early postpartum moments.

There are also longer-term benefits worth considering.

Disposable pads and liners are designed for single use. They’re worn briefly, then thrown away. The financial and environmental cost adds up quickly. Reusable absorbent lingerie offers a more sustainable alternative, reducing waste while also becoming more economical. A small rotation of pieces can replace hundreds of disposables. They’re also something you can prepare ahead of giving birth.

Many women choose to include a few pairs in their hospital bag (often aptly called the "go-bag"), washed, ready, and waiting alongside the essentials. It’s a small step that can make those first days feel just that little bit more manageable.

Because while postpartum is a time of immense giving, we need to care for mum too. Wicks is designed to be part of that care. Here is a link our full collection page.
